Cape Town Leads the Way in Community Spirit

Moving to a new city brings with it a myriad of considerations, with finding the right place to live and work topping the list. However, equally crucial is the quest for a community of like-minded individuals who share similar interests and passions. Remitly, a global financial services company, recently delved into this aspect, analyzing data from the popular social media app Meetup to unveil the cities with the most vibrant community spirit.
The analysis involved counting the number of available Meetup groups within each city and its surrounding area, adjusting for population size to ensure a fair comparison. The results were particularly illuminating for Cape Town, which emerged as the African city with the ‘best community spirit.’
Cape Town, renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse culture, secured the top spot on the list, surpassing both Johannesburg and Pretoria. The city boasted an impressive 0.3 Meetup groups per 10,000 residents, providing a plethora of options ranging from dog lover communities to meditation groups.
What sets Cape Town apart is its remarkable 153 Meetup groups, indicating a thriving community culture that caters to a diverse range of interests. When considering the population size, this translates to approximately 0.3 groups per 10,000 residents, showcasing the city’s commitment to fostering connections and shared experiences.
Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, claimed the second position on the list with a substantial total of 133 groups, highlighting its own flourishing community scene. Meanwhile, Pretoria secured the third spot, offering 15 Meetup groups for exploration.

Jago McKenzie, Business Management Director at Remitly, emphasized the importance of a strong sense of community in fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. He noted that such connections can prevent the feelings of isolation and loneliness that often accompany a move to a new place.
“A strong sense of community can increase your sense of belonging and purpose, and prevent any feelings of isolation and loneliness that can be common when moving somewhere new,” McKenzie commented. He also highlighted the evolving nature of community engagement in the social media age, stating, “Community groups and meetups are not new, but the way we access them has changed drastically in the social media age. Using platforms such as Meetup is a brilliant way to find the best groups for you to connect with quickly and easily.”
Cape Town’s recognition as the African city with the ‘best community spirit’ underscores its commitment to creating a welcoming environment for residents and newcomers alike. The abundance of Meetup groups reflects a city that values the importance of shared interests and connections, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a vibrant and inclusive community spirit.
