TRAVEL MOZAMBIQUE

There’s nothing like a tropical escape to a deserted island to beat away the winter blues and rekindle romance – and Mozambique, along the south-east coastline of Africa, offers travellers an affordable and luxurious escape to paradise. It’s the combination of white sandy beaches, balmy tropical weather and understated luxury that brings travellers to these beaches every year. Renowned for its hospitality, delicious cuisine and selection of upmarket resorts, Mozambique allows you complete privacy and luxury.

Here are some of our top tips to traipse Mozambique and have the time of your life.

Practical Matters

Travellers to Mozambique should have a valid passport, with at least six months of travel available.

You will need a VISA if you are not from South Africa, Zambia, Botswana or Swaziland. In some cases it is possible to purchase your VISA at the border, but we recommend you arrange it prior to your travel.

Currency

The official currency is Meticais (pronounced Meticash) but there are lots of places that accept South African Rands and US Dollars. It’s recommended that you carry local currency for trading with vendors at markets and craft stalls.

Most resorts lodges and hotels will accept credit cards and trade in dollars.

It’s worth checking this before your departure.

The Socio-Political Climate

Mozambique only achieved independence in 1975, and this was followed by a bitter and devastating 17-year civil war. The country is rebuilding and boasts a rapidly growing economy, thanks to its resource-rich environment.

The people are lovely, and very hospitable, always happy to trade with tourists.

The Climate

During the winter months you can expect temperatures of 15C to 26C , and temperatures of 21C to 31C during the summer months. Although it rarely gets cold it is advisable to pack a lightweight jacket if you’re travelling during the winter or rainy season.

Rainy season typically falls between mid-November and April.

What Should You Pack?

Mozambique is a resort-style holiday destination and casual, comfortable clothes are suitable for most times of the year. Hats, sunblock, sunglasses, sandals and walking shoes are a good idea.

Malaria Prophylaxis

Mozambique is a malaria area and you should take malaria prophylaxis before and during your stay. It is also recommended that you wear plenty of mosquito repellent to avoid getting bitten during your stay.

Flights In And Out Of Mozambique

Getting in and out of Mozambique is quick and efficient when you fly-in. Here is a list of Mozambique’s international airports:

  • Maputo International Airport
  • Vilanculos International Airport
  • Pemba International Airport

Transfers from the airport to your lodge are usually done by road, helicopter or boat, depending on where you’ll be staying.

Don’t drink the water

It’s not advisable to drink tap water in Mozambique so stick to the bottled variety. Make sure that lids are completely sealed too.

What to do?

If laying back tanning, dozing and reading on unspoilt beaches is too tame for you, you’ll be pleased to know that Mozambique is an adventure-seeker’s paradise. There’s plenty to see, do, explore and experience – so the longer your stay, the more you can fit in.

It’s best for snorkelling, scuba diving, horse rides on the beach, fishing, boogie boarding, helicopter tours, catch and release fishing excursions.
