The iconic Table Mountain cable car is temporarily closed for maintenance until September 1. During this period, all commercial operations will be halted to comply with international safety and preventive maintenance protocols, including the Swiss BAV regulations for cableways.

According to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), this annual maintenance shutdown typically occurs mid-year, following the school holidays, aligning with South Africa’s quieter winter tourism season.

Andries de Vries, TMACC’s Technical Executive, emphasized that they meticulously inspect and service every part of the cableway, ensuring it meets international best practices and the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) specifications. He noted that while there is never a perfect time for such extensive work, the winter season has the least impact on the many global travelers who come to experience Table Mountain.

This year’s maintenance is particularly intensive. “Each piece of equipment and component of the Cableway, including the cable cars, track ropes, and other infrastructure items, requires unique inspection and maintenance cycles as recommended by the OEM,” stated TMACC.

While some maintenance periods are less disruptive, the work planned for 2024 is more extensive, ensuring the continued safety and reliability of the cableway for all its future visitors.
