Scratch-Made Homemade Apple Pie

Serves: 1 Large pie, serves 8

Nothing beats a delicious homemade apple pie, scratch-made and baked to golden perfection. With a flaky, buttery crust and a sweet, spiced filling, this apple pie is sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients

For the Pie Crust:

  • 170g Butter, cold and cubed
  • 8 Tbsp Cold Water
  • 315g Snowflake Cake Wheat Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt

For the Pie Filling:

  • 1kg Granny Smith Apples, cored, peeled, and sliced
  • 150g Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Snowflake Cake Wheat Flour
  • 1 Pinch of Salt
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 Pinch of Nutmeg
  • 1 Lemon, halved (juice of one half only)

To Top:

  • 1 Egg, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar

Method

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust:
    • Mix the flour and salt in a bowl.
    • Add the cubed butter and mix until pea-sized clumps form.
    • Gradually add cold water until the dough comes together (you may not need all the water). The dough should not be too tacky or sticky.
    • Form the dough into a ball, cover, and refrigerate.
  2. Prepare the Pie Filling:
    • In a bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well, then cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 200ºC.
  4. Roll Out the Dough:
    • On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves to about 3 mm thick.
    • Roll the dough onto your rolling pin and unroll it onto a pie dish, making sure the dough reaches all edges. Trim the excess dough.
  5. Assemble the Pie:
    • Pour the apple filling into the pie crust and pat down.
    • Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the top of the filling.
    • Trim the excess dough from the edges and crimp the edges together.
  6. Top and Bake:
    • Brush the pie with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
    • Cut slits in the top crust to create vents. Decorate with pastry offcuts if desired.
    • Bake for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    • Allow the pie to cool slightly before serving warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
